Taxes...

Listening to Charlie Rangell the Congreesman from New York prattle on about tax reform I was reminded of this lesson. Pull up your chairs folks and learn..

Tax breaks & the truth about ‘progressive’ taxes

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1.The sixth would pay $3.The seventh would pay $7.The eighth would pay $12.The ninth would pay $18.The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. 'Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before and the first four continued to drink for free, but once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20, 'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!' 'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got TEN times more than I!'

‘That’s true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.

Questioning The Goreacle ....
as in HOW DARE YOU!

Remember that British judge who found 9 Convenient Lies in the movie An Inconvenient Truth? Well, what the Goreacle and his cronies could not do in court they are trying through the media. In response to their braying, another report has been authored looking at all of the errors in the movie. The article entitled "35 Inconvenient Truths" by Christopher Walter of the Science & Public Policy Institute once again skewers the thought process of everyone's favorite "D" student and First Loser in that Presidential Race, The Goreacle. Here's a taste, but the entire article is, as the British say, a jolly good read!

A spokesman for Al Gore has issued a questionable response to the news that in October 2007 the High Court in London had identified nine “errors” in his movie An Inconvenient Truth. The judge had stated that, if the UK Government had not agreed to send to every secondary school in England a corrected guidance note making clear the mainstream scientific position on these nine “errors”, he would have made a finding that the Government’s distribution of the film and the first draft of the guidance note earlier in 2007 to all English secondary schools had been an unlawful contravention of an Act of Parliament prohibiting the political indoctrination of children.

We now itemize 35 of the scientific errors and exaggerations in Al Gore’s movie. The first nine were listed by the judge in the High Court in London in October 2007 as being “errors.” The remaining 26 errors are just as inaccurate or exaggerated as the nine spelt out by the judge, who made it plain during the proceedings that the Court had not had time to consider more than these few errors. The judge found these errors serious enough to require the UK Government to pay substantial costs to the plaintiff.

Damn facts, always getting in the way.

Fired up in San Diego...
First, Get a Lawyer!

The fires are abating and the house is a pile of rubble. The sad news is your problems are just beginning. You now have an Insurance Claim. You are about to enter the Twilight Zone of the arcane world of fire insurance coverage. Good Luck.

Homeowners Insurance Company’s are flying in “adjusters” from across the country to handle the claims of individuals like YOU. Highly trained professionals schooled at the Academy of Saying No are about to take control of your life. They are backed up by entire departments of Lawyers, who formerly served as instructors at the Academy of Saying No. They are here to help you. Bwhaaaaaaaahhhhhaa!

Gather round children and listen to the Rumbear. Insurance companies make money by taking it from you. (i.e. Premiums, fees etc.) They do not make money by giving it back to you. (i.e. Claims, toasters, anything “free”). It’s all about the money. They have it, you are entitled to some of it. Good Luck.

Let's look at the playing field this situation presents......Having just lost your home, let’s assume that your frame of mind is somewhere between highly stressed and nervous breakdown. Suffice it to say that you are not in any shape to negotiate with anyone on anything. Yet, the adjusters are here. They want answers, now. Here’s the scenario……Can’t think, take this check, sign here, and we will move along. Claim closed. NEXT!

If the situation sounds like it is stacked against you, that’s because it is. The goal of the insurance carrier is to limit the total dollar amount of claims, all claims, including YOURS. Remember, that’s how they make money. You need help.

Do yourself a favor. Level the playing field just a little. Get everything you are entitled to under the policy. Get a lawyer. Somebody who can fight for you. Get a lawyer who has dealt with insurance companies. If you can, get one who has worked for insurance companies. We are partial to this guy, but we are bias. Be that as it may, GET A LAWYER!

And now back to our regularly scheduled banter…….
Boom!

My olde pal Mark D. Shark is gonna want one of these to play with. (Probably on private property though...hint, hint!)
I'll bring my old bowling ball leftover from my days a member of Dr. Bob's Lost Bowling Team. Ahhhh, the memories.

Fire News

Check out this site for some GREAT graphics and information. Great work!
Ummmm...Kay.

Well, this headline caught my eye...

Aguirre wants San Diego evacuated in wake of wildfires
Citing dangerous weather conditions and poor air quality, San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre this week advocated a voluntary evacuation of the nation's eighth-largest city.

That's right. Never to be out done in caring for the peoples of San Diego it has been revealed that the tin foil hat wearing City Attorney wanted all of San Diego evacuated. Sure, 8th largest city in the nation...emptied.

Let that one sink in for a while.

I'll be here.

Let's Celebrate!

Happy UN Day! The United Nations came into existence on 24 October 1945, after the Charter had been ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council—the Republic of China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and by a majority of the other 46 signatories.

Yea........

Now how do we get rid of it?
Democratic Spin!

Well that did not take long...the fire is the fault of George Bush! and, and, and GlowBall Warming! Yes, in their never ending quest to blame everything on the entire planet to be the fault of George Bush and/or GlowBall Warming, the Democrats have weighed in. Those towering symbols of intellect and knowledge, Hairy Reid and Barbara Boxer, have opened mouth and inserted foot.

First, Hairy: “One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday, stressing the need to pass the Democrats’ comprehensive energy package.

Moments later, when asked by a reporter if he really believed global warming caused the fires, he appeared to back away from his comments, saying there are many factors that contributed to the disaster.

Second, Barbara: On a related subject, leave it to uber-Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer of California to politicize this fire. Today she issued a statement charging the Bush administration with responsibility for the widespread fire damage. If our National Guard units weren't in Iraq, she said, we'd have twice as many people and twice as much equipment to deal with the fire.

Truth is that the fires are a result of the yearly, predictable dry season and the Santana Winds. Happens in cycles every year. The National Guard...they are here. However placing 500 or 5000 troops in front of flames driven by 50-60 mph winds will only result in some crispy critters. More Guard would be useless, Ms. Boxer. If you want to discuss the use of guard assets, let's talk about the tankers sitting up at Pt. Magoo that are not being used by CALFIRE. Seems that CALFIRE has union contracts that prevent the use of "outside" resources unless the union approves. See, if the National Guard can put out fires, that would mean we don't need a huge goverment agency like CALFIRE and if we don't need CALFIRE then we don't employ union boys. It's all about the Benjamin's, $$$.

So there you have it, your Democratic Party in action. Never above exploiting the losses of others for political gain. Sheesh, you'd think they would wait till the fires were out.
Burn, Baby Burn..
The Disco Inferno that is San Diego continues into another day. Some areas have turned a corner and seem to be coming under control. However, there are several new fires that cropped up overnight. They were serious enough that both major north-south freeways (I-5 & I-15) out of the county were shut down for some time. I can't even pretend to keep up with all that's going on. Bruce Henderson's site remains one of the best resources. His site was down for some time yesterday as the bandwith exploded with all the traffic, but it is tracking now on a dedicated server. Check him out !

Thoughts and prayers go out to all.

Here's the list....

Amen to That!

Pat Buchanan and I may disagree on several things. However, his recent article on the THREAT of GlowBall Warming is spot on. Shamelessly lifted excerpt follows...

Is then global warming – a steady rise in the temperature of the Earth to where the polar ice caps melt, oceans rise 23 feet, cities sink into the sea and horrendous hurricanes devastate the land – an imminent and mortal danger?

Put me down as a disbeliever.

Like the panics of bygone eras, this one has the aspect of yet another re-enactment of the Big Con. The huckster arrives in town, tells all the rubes that disaster impends for them and their families, but says there may be one last chance they can be saved – but it will take a lot of money. And the folks should go about collecting it, right now.

This, it seems to me, is what the global-warming scare and scam are all about – frightening Americans into transferring sovereignty, power and wealth to a global political elite that claims it alone understands the crisis and it alone can save us from impending disaster.

We are told global warming was responsible for the hurricane summer of Katrina and Rita that devastated Texas, Mississippi and New Orleans. Yet Dr. William Gray, perhaps the nation's foremost expert on hurricanes, says he and his most experienced colleagues believe humans have little impact on global warming and global warming cannot explain the frequency or ferocity of hurricanes. After all, we had more hurricanes in the first half of the 20th century than in the last 50 years, as global warming was taking place.

"We're brainwashing our children," says Gray. "They're going to the Gore movie ('An Inconvenient Truth') and being fed all this. It's ridiculous. ... We'll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realize how foolish it was."
Gray does concede that for a scholar to question global warming can put his next federal grant in mortal peril.

While modest warming has taken place, there is no conclusive evidence human beings are responsible, no conclusive evidence Earth's temperature is rising dangerously or will reach intolerable levels and no conclusive evidence that warming will do more harm than good.

The glaciers may be receding, but the polar bear population is growing, alarmingly in some Canadian Indian villages. Though more people on our planet of 6 billion may die of heat, estimates are that many more may be spared death from the cold. The Arctic ice cap may be shrinking, but that may mean year-round passage through northern Canadian waters from the Atlantic to the Pacific and the immense resources of the Arctic made more accessible to man.

Why else did Vladimir Putin's boys make their dash to claim the pole?

The mammoth government we have today is a result of politicians rushing to solve "crises" by creating and empowering new federal agencies.
Whether it's hunger, poverty or homelessness, in the end, the poor are always with us, but now we have something else always with us: scores of thousands of federal bureaucrats and armies of academics to study the problem and assess the progress, with all their pay and benefits provided by our tax dollars.

Cal Coolidge said that when you see 10 troubles coming up the road toward you, sometimes the best thing to do is nothing, because nine of them will fall into the ditch before they get to you. And so it will be with global warming, if we don't sell out America to the hucksters who would save us.

Go read the whole thing here.
Fired Up....
..in San Diego.
(Day 2)

Da Bear family remains safely ensconced to the south. The latest overnight information can be found at Bruce Henderson's site. He has maps and lot's of detail. Seems another fire started overnight at the LaJolla Indian Reservation (FYI it's not in LaJolla). It is being called the Poomacha Fire and has consumed 1000+ acres. The path has it heading towards the Lawrence Welk resort right off of I-15...and as a point of reference, we all know where that is. (Next to hidden Meadows on the map here).
Thoughts and prayers to all.

Fire!

The southland is ablaze. The last few days has seen the Santana Winds blow the flames towards the coast. On most days the breeze blows from the coast inland. In Santana conditions the winds reverse the flow. Thus a fire in the mountains that would normally blow inland heads for the coast, and all the homes therewith. Big Trouble. Sustained 40 MPH winds overnight. The aerial tankers can't fly and the firefighters are turned into spectators. This ain't no weenie roast.

Godspeed to all of the brave firefighters and aircrews giving their all.

BOOM!
It's a matter of degrees...

One has them, the other has a Nobel Prize.

ONE of the world's foremost meteorologists has called the theory that helped Al Gore share the Nobel Peace Prize "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don't understand how the atmosphere works".

Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth.

His comments came on the same day that the Nobel committee honoured Mr Gore for his work in support of the link between humans and global warming.

"We're brainwashing our children," said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. "They're going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It's ridiculous."

Don't confuse us with facts our minds are already made up...we saw it in a movie!!! Ridiculous, indeed.
An Apology....
would be nice.

The Vatican, after 700 years, is releasing documents that establish the heresy claims against the Knights Templar in 1312 A.D. were....uh, umm, trumped up. But hey, what's a little disemboweling and burning at the stake amongst friends.

But Rumbear, why do you care?

Whoa! This is certainly in the Top Ten of reasons to go to Dental School. Maybe the Top Five!!

So, I got to ask....did it work? I mean if it works then maybe...oh, never mind.....

(2007-10-12) — Although former Vice President Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize this week for his work as a global-warming performance artist, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled early today that President George Bush would receive the gold medal, the diploma and the $750,000.....

I expect to hear of the green party fatwah on the judge any time now!
Speed Reader!

and you?
Fred Said......

This missive was tossed over the transom of the good ship Rumbear as I was having coffee this morning. Seems to be from those wise folks over at Fred 08.

Yesterday, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani continued their partisan bickering, this time over things like the constitutionality of the line item veto. While they played politics, Fred Thompson rose above it and took his conservative, small government, tax cutting message straight to the American people.
He talked directly to the American people about keeping more of what they earn. He talked truth about entitlements. He talked about keeping America safe. He made it known that when it comes to our national security, it won’t be his attorneys that Fred Thompson will first sit down with, it will be his generals.
Overall, he showed the courage and honesty to address the nation’s real problems, and the leadership to solve them. Fred Thompson may have been standing between Romney and Rudy, but he stood far above both of them.

Sounds good to me. Not that I am biased, or anything, like that.
He's a Wiener!

Taking a page out of the Rosie Ruiz school of marathon running, former Mexican Presidential candidate, (kinda like AlGore!) won the Berlin Marathon last week. He even bettered his fastest personal finishing time for a marathon by over an hour! Way to go!

Well, sort of. Seems he got a little sidetracked in the middle part of the race. He missed several checkpoints in this 10 kilometer leg. Not surprisingly, he was running at a pace that was better than the world record holder who won the race over this stretch.

He ran each five-kilometer segment on record in an average of about 25 minutes, according to computerized timers, compared with about 14 minutes run by race winner Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia.

But between kilometers 20 and 35, those missing from the race's computer record, Madrazo appeared to run every five kilometers in 11 minutes, faster than the 34-year-old Ethiopian winner who set a world record for a marathon of 2:04:26.

Wow! He was running so fast they must have missed him at the checkpoints. When queried about the suspicious results the former first loser (kinda like AlGore) said ".....denied any irregularities in the race."

Yeah.......r i g h t.......

Happy Columbus Day!

That's right, today is the day we celebrate Columbus, Ohio. Why a town in Ohio warrants a day to honor itself is beyond me. After all, it is Ohio. Nevertheless, it is a federal holiday and we must respect such authority. So fire up the BBQ, grab a cold adult beverage and roast some chestnuts on an open fire...or gather the family around and exchange presents while feasting on turkey or maybe just set off some fireworks in celebration of this "joyous" day.

Ya gotta wonder what that olde guy Chris Columbus thought when he discovered Ohio and found a town named after him. Go figure.

Bruise!

Apparently aging rocker Bruise Springsteen doesn't like anyone that questions his patriotism.

Rocker Bruce Springsteen answers critics who call his anti-war sentiments unpatriotic by saying the real sin against patriotism is saying nothing while your country is being harmed.

Uh yeah, right Bruise, being a critic is certainly patriotic. Let us all recall those words of wisdom uttered by Inigo Montoya in the movie Princess Bride, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Just entertain us geeetarman and well, shut your pie hole, your embarrassing yourself.
Who Ya Gonna Call?....
Blackwater!

The latest victim of the Drive By Media hate fest in Washington D.C., Blackwater, continues to do it's, uh hmm, job. Having failed miserably with the General Betrayus advertisement the Democrats have shifted fire from the U.S. Military to Blackwater. Yet, while Congressional Democrats twitter about their hearings asking pointless questions of Blackwater founder and CEO Eric Prince his employees in Iraq continue to perform on the job.

The latest episode occurred recently when the Polish ambassador was travelling through a supposedly secure neighborhood in Baghdad when his convoy was hit. The attack was described as well planned and left the ambassador pinned down in his vehicle with bodyguards dead nearby. Enter Blackwater.

U.S. Embassy officials dispatched Blackwater helicopters to evacuate the ambassador and others. Blackwater was not involved in protecting the Polish convoy.

Fast, efficient support. Game over. Let's move on...you Democrats too.
